Designer Profile

Helen Lanes is a Board Member Emeritas for AAHID. A graduate from Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science in Interior Design, she has over 30 years of experience, exclusively in healthcare design in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Helen serves as the Interior Design Practice Leader for Michael Graves Architecture and leads the firm's interiors team across all practice areas, providing expertise in space planning, interior architecture and universal design principals.  Helen's experience includes 6 years on the Owner's side, as the Interior Design Manager for Inova Health System. Helen’s focus had been on branding, developing and implementing design guidelines, facility management, and design oversight for all of the Inova Operating Units.  She focuses on teaming with and communicating with design teams and the Executive Committees of the individual Operating Units; as well as developing strategies for maximizing patient, visitor and staff experience by integrating evidence-based design into design solutions.

Helen’s experience includes working as a lead designer with some of the largest and leading design firms in the nation, on many award winning projects with many leading health systems.  Her expertise is broad including designing environments for the aging, acute care, ambulatory care, specialty units as well as science and technology.

Helen has authored several articles on design process and has spoken on design strategies for supporting the Patient Experience as well as the aging population.  She is deeply committed to improving the quality of the physical experience within healthcare organizations.
